State Meet Highlights

The South Carolina state championships are comprised of four classifications, which competed together at Columbia's Spring Valley High School. The Palmetto State doesn't always produce the biggest stars but it has a serious national track and field athlete of the year candidate in Raven Saunders, who won her final state shot put title by nearly 20 feet on Saturday.

Top Performances:

- Raven Saunders threw 55-8 to win the 2A shot put to smash the meet record by more than 10 feet. Second place was 36 feet. No high school thrower other than Saunders has ever thrown that far and she was still about a foot short of her own national record. The Burke seniors also won the discus.

- The Ridge View girls, anchored by Arlicia Bush, ran a new all-time state best 3:49.07 to win the 4A 4x400 relay. That surpassed J.L. Mann's 2013 time of 3:50.35.

- Jasmine Quinn of Fort Dorchester won four individual titles for the second straight year and she broke an all-time state record along the way. She jumped US#4 20-2.50 to break the long jump record. She also ran 13.54 in the 100 hurdles but there was no wind reading. She has run 13.33 already this year without a reading and US#4 13.55 with a verified legal wind. She also ran 11.66 and 23.77 (nwi) to win the 100 and 200.

- Sophomore Tavien Feaster of Spartanburg locked down the 4A boys sprint double with 10.59 and 21.29.

- Tre Stanley of Northwestern ran US#4 53.42 to win the 4A 400 hurdles. He was also second in a close 110-meter hurdles race.

- Desmond Anderson from Broome popped a big 24-0.50 wind-legal long jump in the 3A meet, good for US#11.

Top Teams:

J.L. Mann of Greenville won the girls 4A championship with 71 points. Northwestern of Rock Hill dominated the boys 4A meet with 92.5 points.

Top Competition: The girls 4A long jump not only produced a new all-time state best, it also featured a great competition and two jumpers over 20 feet. Quinn, one of the standout sprint-hurdle-jump athletes in the country, got her lifetime best with US#4 20-2.50. And senior Angelica Collins of Wando went US#6 20-1. (Collins won the 4A triple jump with 38-4).

Record-breakers: All-time state best performances were established by the Ridge View girls 4x400 squad and by Quinn in the 100 hurdles. But Saunders is definitely the athlete who creates the most buzz, because any time she competes the US high school record is in jeopardy.
